The FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise chugs on with the fast paced if illogical FAST FIVE that revs up as the opening salvo of the summer movie season. See the premiere in Rio HERE
Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson (aka the always sweating ROCK), director Justin Lin has pulled together the F&F team and set them this time in the exotic city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a bank heist that rivals THE ITALIAN JOB with its intricacy but a BOURNE IDENTITY movie with its improbable stunts.
It’s all eye candy for the tuner set as we race fast cars, watch hot Brazilian babes, and cheer on a mano a mano battle between Diesel and Johnson that is practically Olympian in smackdown. The script is tidy and fast paced — fortunately, no attempt at one line zingers that neither Diesel nor Walker can do well. And fans of Chrysler Corporation will also be thrilled to see Dodge Challengers and Chargers pull off amazing feats of fury. (I know, I want one!)
Story in a nutshell – doesn’t matter. It’s a Robin Hood story where Dominic (Diesel) and his crew plan to rob from a Brazilian drug lord. That eases any moral dilemma although the major collateral damage to the city of Rio during the final chase scene made me wonder – theoretically – if the heist was worth it.
And that’s the point of an F&F movie. You’re in the passenger seat. Don’t bother trying to figure out the movie, just enjoy the ride!
