“Faster” – DVD review

Action fans rejoice! Dwayne Johnson, aka: The Rock, stars in FASTER, a non-stop kick ass movie that drinks deep from Tarantino’s and John Woo’s classic well. Johnson plays an ex-convict, Driver, who, literally minutes after getting out of jail, storms off to kill everyone who participated in the death of his half-brother during a botched robbery.

It’s like KILL BILL and Uma Thurman’s “kill” list as The Driver brutally mows down everyone on his list with little regard for being witnessed.
The strong cast includes Billy Bob Thornton who plays “The Cop” – a washed-up addicted detective just days from retiring. Lucky him, he is on his last big case, pursuing The Driver’s classic muscle car as he leaves a trail of blood crisscrossing Bakersfield, California to Henderson, Nevada.

actor Oliver Jackson Cohen
Directed by George Tillman, better known for dramas such as MEN OF HONOR and SOUL FOOD. FASTER is a slick revenge movie with a number of surprise twists and turns. Written by brothers Joe and Tony Gayton (MURDER BY NUMBERS, THE SALTON SEA), FASTER is an action movie with complex characters and backstories. As Thornton’s cop fights his addiction and an unhappy police partner, there’s yet another killer in pursuit – impossibly handsome British newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who plays “The Killer” – a psychotic hitman hired to kill The Driver.
Jackson-Cohen pretty much steals the movie from Johnson and Thornton as an ice cold killer with a need to succeed. He has a garage full of exotic supercars, a blonde on his yoga mat, and a shaky hand full of pills. What’s not to like?
FASTER is a text book case of a marketing campaign that missed its mark. Advertised originally as if it were a FAST AND FURIOUS movie, this movie is for the Tarantino/Woo crowd. FASTER is definitely worth checking out on video.
