Zac Efron to display his buff bod and leading man qualities in 3 new films

Heartthrob Zac Efron spent the summer flexing his newly pumped pecs and abs for the delectation of tabloid readers and gossip website fans. But he’ll soon out promoting several upcoming films. First up is “New Year’s Eve” (see trailer) and its star-packed cast. A trailer was released this week.

The ensemble romantic comedy was directed by Garry Marshall as a follow-up of sorts to last year’s hit “Valentine’s Day” and its cast of seeming thousands.

Boldfaced names in the cast include Robert De Niro—naturally! It’s New York, after all—Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Abigail Breslin, Josh Duhamel, Carla Gugino, Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Sofia Vergara. And that’s not everyone, either.

“New Year’s Eve” will be in theatres December 9.

About that buffed-out physique…? He acquired the muscle in preparation for “The Lucky One,” based on the popular Nicholas Sparks novel. He plays a U.S. Marine on a quest to uncover the identity of a beautiful woman whose photograph he stumbled across while serving in Iraq.

“Whether you accept it or not, Zac Efron continues to grow up, slowly morphing from teen idol to straight-up ladies’ man,” wrote New York Magazine last summer about the tween idol’s latest role.

You’ll likely see “The Lucky One” in early 2012.

Finally, Deadline.com reported earlier this year that Efron is attached to headline “Die in a Gun Fight,” the script for which garnered quite a bit of buzz in Hollywood. He would play “a fight-prone and death-obsessed young society man who pursues a romance with the daughter of his father’s enemy.” (So those new muscles will come in handy.) “New York Magazine called it “a Tarantino-esque blend of ‘Gossip Girl,’ ‘True Romance‘ and ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ ”
