It’s pilot season in Hollywood. Sample episodes of television shows are now filming which will then be presented to the networks for a final determination before going into production. Before that happens, the more buzz a show can generate, the better its chances at going to series. And one of the buzziest right now is the reboot of “Wonder Woman“ for NBC. Most of hype has been generated by the iconic superhero’s famously red-blue-and-boobs costume.
Photos of Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights“) in character first made the rounds earlier this month. Lynda Carter, who famously filled out Wonder Woman’s togs from 1975-79, gave her approval. But overall, media observers as well as the geek culture populating the Internet blew the updated costume and Palicki’s styling a big, fat raspberry.
Flash forward a couple of weeks. A portion of Hollywood Blvd. outside the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was closed for filming. Photos of Palicki (and her stunt double) in action were leaked to the blogosphere. The sight of the actress huffing down the famed Walk of Fame at full speed with her breasts about to fly out of her skintight red bustier still prompted catcalls from some corners. But the overall reaction was much improved.
“Gone are the super-shiny blue pants and matching boots,” notes EW.com. “It certainly seems more comfortable for everyday jogging on top of cars in Hollywood.”
“The pants have been toned down from their almost fluorescent shade of blue,” SheKnows.com observed. “They look like they might be made of fabric instead of paint. The boots are back to their original shade of red and almost flat! Crime fighting requires a sensible shoe… And that shiny red lipstick is gone. [We are] not going to argue that she’s going to need industrial strength tape to keep her assets in that bustier, since the costume has always been that way. [We’re] just happy to see Wonder Woman look like a woman and not a porn star.”
Emmy-winner David E. Kelley (“Ally McBeal, “The Practice“) is the chief creative force behind the reboot. A starry supporting cast for the pilot episode includes Elizabeth Hurley and Cary Elwes as well as Justin Bruening from last season’s busted “Knight Rider” remake.
