Who is Ginger Bred? A local Chicago play picks up Internet buzz

The Legend of Ginger Bred: a story of sex, salvation & baked goods premieres in Chicago March 11-20th. This low budget, off-loop show has been getting the attention of people all over the Internet because of its kitschy images. Posts on Facebook, Twitter plus a write-up by Chicago Tribune caught our attention.  “I was working on a series of adaptations of fairy tales and the story of The Ginger Bread Man kept ringing in my ears,” says writer and director Chris Garcia Peak. “I wanted to see how these stories that we can all relate to can be exploded into bizarre and off-beat new stories or versions but maintaining their core themes,” states Peak. The play focuses on the lead character Ginger Bred, a teen runaway who hitches across the US to land in Los Angeles in the hands of some freakish characters such as a one-legged pimp.  Ginger winds up in food fetish pornography and selling more than her baked goods. Peak speaks from his first hand experience, “I worked in Los Angeles for many years in the entertainment industry and you always heard of teens and girls who got mixed up with frightening Hollywood characters.” Ginger performs in front of her fictional band called The Sunday Brunch during a major electrical storm that resurrects people from her past. “It’s a campy and whacky show that lets people unwind and just laugh for an hour,” says Peak. “We have a scene where we shot some fake food porn, and our lead actress had to eat an entire cream pie, a real cream pie…it was hysterical, and frightening… hopefully people will experience some bizarre theatre in the windy city,” Peak says holding back laughter. The Legend of Ginger Bred a Story of sex, salvation & Baked Goods plays in Chicago for six shows only at The Gorilla Tango Theatre 1919 in Milwaukee.
