“Spies, cops, holy fools and well-armed children” populate The Power of Few, a new independently produced feature film from writer-director Leone Marucci. The film, described as a “sci-fi action-drama,” tracks a quintet of “unusual characters” who are connected in unexpected ways to “an extraordinary smuggling operation on a day when religious conspiracy and urban crime collide.”
The low-budget indie packs a potent cast of respected character actors: Anthony Anderson, Moon Bloodgood, Jesse Bradford, Q’Orianka Kilcher, Christian Slater, Christopher Walken and Nicky Whelan.
Marucci is a native of Youngstown, Ohio and an alumnus of Ohio State University. He recently returned to his alma mater to speak to students about the filmmaking process in advance of his movie’s premiere in Columbus.
“I was a student here at Ohio State,” he recalls, “and between my time studying the media, my affinity for storytelling, and the characters and life around Ohio State, it really was the inspiration—the first ideas, the first drafts of the script came from here.”
Aspiring filmmakers and artists can draw inspiration from Marucci’s story because The Power of Few took nearly a decade on its way to the silver screen. Without the resources of an A-list studio or production company, he along with executive producer Roy Kurtluyan, and other members of the creative team had to overcome numerous obstacles and other challenges to follow through on their vision.
The film opens in L.A. this weekend.
