This week, Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard attended the opening day of the American Film Market to meet with buyers for his new film RUSH which began shooting in September in Europe.
The filmmaker talked about his vision for the film penned by Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON).
It stars Chris Hemsworth (THOR) and Daniel Brühl (INGLORIOUS BASTERDS) in the legendary Formula One race of the 70s, taking place between Niki Lauda (Brühl) and James Hunt (Hemsworth) which didn’t exactly end on that weekend. That’s when Lauda crashed his Ferrari during the second lap, causing his face to burn severely while he inhaled toxic hot gases that scorched his lungs; since during its second lap Lauda’s car was still full of fuel.
It could have been the end of the driver’s career. But after being rescued by three rival drivers, the film goes on to celebrate Lauda’s spirit after such life-changing accident, and taking the wheel again to do what he does best, racing professionally.
In September, Howard shot an entire weekend of races on 35mm film, at the Nurburgring race track in Germany, the actual location, using Formula One classic cars,
Still in production, Exclusive Films International, is debuting RUSH to buyers at AFM, and Universal Pictures will release the film in the US in 2012.
