Interscope’s new recording artist Sabrina is a straight shooter, and I give her that. She gets extra points for honestly state what most musicians, or even run-of-the-mill popstars wont dare to do today, and that’s uttering more than a few choice words about pop phenomenon Lady Gaga. As an artist herself, having collaborated with the likes of Nappy Roots, Jayo Felony, Knoc’turnal, and other urban artists, Sabrina has earned a digital distribution deal through Interscope records, and last week she came out of the gate, guns blazing, with her first single “I Wanna Shoot Lady Gaga,” taking aim at the pop music superstar.
In a self-penned ‘open letter’ of sorts for SOHH.com, the pop singer owned her controversial new release, bravely facing the fire that came with it, saying: “Lady Gaga represents everything that’s wrong with the core of our society.”
The singer took aim at the unconditional love Gaga has been receiving both by the media and the public, especially by the gay community who welcomed the pop superstar with open arms, without questions. Sabrina finds it bothersome the way young girls emulate Gaga’s every move. She calls Gaga a “morally bankrupt tramp, who lacks integrity and gives slutty a whole new meaning” and goes on to question why such person is placed on a pedestal and such powerful position of influence.
“My song ‘I Wanna Shoot Lady Gaga’ is not about shooting Stefani Germanotta, the lonely, insecure girl better known to the world as her alter ego, Lady Gaga. The song is about killing off the gimmick, the character of Lady Gaga. Its not meant to be sadistic or evil, I mean, just check out the song’s artwork. We used a squirt gun – nothing violent, just metaphorical,” explains Sabrina, adding that blogger Perez Hilton is equally at fault for putting Gaga on the map.
It would be a lie if I said I don’t understand (or to some degree don’t agree) with Sabrina and the point she is trying to make. But I also realize that this is a free country and everyone has the right to express themselves as they wish…, with or without the multi-gazillion dollar backing of a huge record label with all its corporate tie-ins.
It is up to the listeners to listen to the music and the lyrics of both Sabrina and Lady Gaga and figure out what the hell do either one of them mean anyway, before sending the really big message, the best ways fans know how: cha-ching – their pockets!
The problem is not in Sabrina’s decision to speak out about the current ‘Lady’ of pop, but rather the fact that, as an artist, Sabrina doesn’t offer anything better than Lady Gaga’s over-produced, disposable sounds and the po-po-po-poor lyrics that go along with them. So, if you ask me – and opinions are like assholes, everyone’s got one…, just ignore them both, and find something better to groove to.
