‘Restrepo’ filmmaker killed in Libya

The filmmaker of Oscar-nominated documentary  “Restrepo” was killed today during a major battle between Moammar Gaddafi’s forces and rebels in the Libyan city of Misurata. Three photographers suffered serious as well according to an eyewitness at the hospital and a Washington Post report.

Tim Hetherington, 41, was a seasoned photographer and the director of documentary film ‘Restrepo’ which focused on the dire and heroic mission of Marines in the deadliest valley in Afghanistan, and earned the filmmaker an Academy Award nomination.

Earlier today, Hetherington died from leg wounds suffered in the attack, according to his publicist, Cathy L. Saypol. “We are saddened beyond words that our friend, photographer and filmmaker, Tim Hetherington was killed in Misurata this morning,” said Saypol, in her statement.

.A group of journalists had accompanied rebel fighters to streets of Misurata, when Gaddafi’s forces unleashed a rain of short-ranged mortars over the city, on Wednesday morning, in order to regain control of the area.

In addition, Chris Hondros, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated photographer with Getty Images was also reported being in grave condition.
