Super Bowl weekend is almost more famous for the commercials aired during its television broadcast than for the action on the gridiron. And those spots don’t come cheap: the average price for a 30-second spot this year was $3.5 million. Audi didn’t blow its budget on buying ad time; they also had some fun with the current pop-culture obsession with vampires.
Their new movie-quality commercial doesn’t specifically focus on an automobile as it does on a single feature—really, really strong LED headlights on the Audi S7, which wreak havoc on a group of partying vampires.
A minute-long spot that aired during the Super Bowl takes a comedic tone and has racked up more than six million views at post time. But a short version is more traditionally creepy. (Fair warning: Twilight superfans—as well as ardent members of Team Edward—probably won’t appreciate the goofier version.)
Audi is also promoting the spots with the #SoLongVampires hashtag on Twitter.
And do you recognize the tall, handsome blond who stars in the commercial spots? That’s New Zealand’s latest rising star, Nico Evers-Swindell. He came to fame last summer when he played Prince William in the TV film “William and Kate” that documented the royal heir’s courtship of Kate Middleton.
