Life after BETTY: America to exec produce bilingual show for MTV

After four seasons on ABC, ”Ugly Betty” is waving is set to sashay away for good.  Cast members are still upset over the show’s cancellation including Vanessa Williams who calls the end to the show a “travesty.”  Many are picking up the pieces and moving on including Star America Ferrera.  The Latina actress is set to exec produce a multicultural telenovela or soap opera called “Pedro and Maria” for MTV.  The show will be a bilingual, modern version of “Romeo and Juliet.”  Ferrera is pairing up with former NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman and Proctor and Gamble on the project which is designed to be very interactive – giving viewers the opportunity to vote on the direction of the storyline via Facebook and Twitter.
OK, if this one doesn’t succeed, something is wrong.  You’ve got your social networking and online components.  It’s bilingual, it’s a perfect match for MTV’s demographic and there are some heavy hitting power houses behind it.  If it flops, they can always tweak the casting and reach another demographic that is popular on MTV and change it to “Pedro and Mario.”
