When 13-year-old Chloe Grace Moretz first broke through as the irresistibly R-rated Hit-Girl in Matthew Vaughn’s cult-tastic 2010 comic book pic, Kick-Ass, fans wondered where on Earth this precociously talented spitfire had come from. Truth is, though barely in her teens, she was already a veteran of the business, having bounced between top rated television shows (Desperate Housewives, My Name Is Earl), family friendly films (Bolt, Diary of A Wimpy Kid) and mildly successful thrillers (The Amityville Horror, The Eye) for most of the aughts.
Lengthy resume aside however, this wide-eyed starlet is just a normal girl from Atlanta, Georgia, with four older brothers making sure that she stays out of trouble; one of whom is dreamboat actor, and burgeoning executive producer, Trevor Duke Moretz. Fortunately for the gifted teen, 26-year-old Trevor Duke also moonlights as an acting coach and traveling companion for his little sis, because the life of an in-demand young thespian can be quite hectic, especially one as versatile as Chloe Grace.
Kick Ass might have introduced the world to the young beauty, but it was her spunky turn as another wise beyond her years tween in yet another film that’s already reached cult classic status – Marc Webb’s touching 2009 rom-com reimagined, 500 Days Of Summer – that first made Hollywood sit up and take notice. As a result of the one two punch of 500’s subtle character work and Kick-Ass’s full-blown movie star mugging, Chloe Grace established herself early on as one of the few actresses able to move effortlessly between big budget films, prestige pics, and smaller, more intimate indies.
She earned the best reviews of her career in 2011, for her devastatingly nuanced turn as a child vampire in Matt Reeves’s Let Me In, a remake of the successful Swedish arthouse flick, Let The Right One In. Then, she followed it up with Martin Scorsese’s gorgeous, multi-million dollar, Oscar-Nominated 3D fable, Hugo, only to return to the realm of the supernatural as a hormonal warewolf in Tim Burton’s big budget screen adaptation of the former television series, Dark Shadows, opposite Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in 2012.
All the while, her older brother, an admitted film geek trapped in the body of a boy band heartbreaker, has been helping his sister navigate the murky waters of Hollywood with the same focus and intensity that allowed him to carve a niche for himself as a working child actor. Under the name, Trevor Duke, the talented cutie guested on JJ Abrams’s iconic turn-of-the-millennium spy series, Alias, and starred in films like 2006’s Big Bad Wolf and 2009’s Youth In Revolt, with Michael Cera, before putting his own career on hold to help guide his sister’s.
Though don’t feel too sorry for this altruistic big bro, because things seem to be working out just fine for Trevor Duke as well. Together, he and his sister have traveled the world since 2012 as Chloe Grace filmed several of the huge upcoming projects that she has scheduled for release in the next 12 months (including the highly anticipated Kick-Ass 2, out later this month, the Kimberly Peirce-directed Carrie remake with Julianne Moore, due in the fall, and Lynne Shelton’s 2014 drama, Laggies, opposite Keira Knightley.) Prior to that, Trevor not only coached his sibling, but he also executive produced her gritty 2011 indie flick, Hick, with Blake Lively and Eddie Redmayne. And if all of that weren’t enough, Mr. Moretz has even scored an executive producing credit on the Kick-Ass sequel.
It appears that we might have the makings of a hot new Hollywood dynasty on our hands. Trevor Duke’s got the looks and charm to make a splash either in front of the camera, or behind the scenes, while Chloe Grace has proven herself to be one of the most talented, versatile, and exciting young actresses working today. And as if that weren’t enough, handsome brother, Colin, who had a small part in Let Me In, seems ready to follow in their footsteps. Clearly, The Moretz siblings are taking over the town.
Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz Plasse, and Jim Carrey in KICK-ASS 2, hit the town on August 16, 2013.
