Since scoring a well-deserved recording deal, thanks to a YouTubed video clip of himself singing and playing the piano, Ellen Degeneres protégé and young music sensation Greyson Chance has been legitimately busy.
The release of his single “waiting outside the lines” has been a promising expression of greater things to come.
In February he successfully Greyson-ified Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s runaway hit “Empire State of Mind” adding his own melodic touch to the song. With recent live appearances in New York, an exclusive performance at Billboard.com, the Grove in Los Angeles, and appearing on late night TV shows, on top of touring with Miranda Cosgrove, the talented Mr. Chance has been working hard to finish his new album. In between his busy schedule, he has managed to answer our questions while entertaining audiences all over the U.S. Through texts, emails, and a chat with BNH here is the recent buzz from the teenaged piano man himself.
BNH: Your brother is quoted saying that when it comes to music you “just feel it.” What is it that you feel when performing songs?
Greyson: I feel incredible when I perform! I love it and it’s always been my dream to do it. I am on tour right now so performing every night is an awesome feeling.
BNH: What makes New York such a magical place, and what is it about New York that inspires you and other musicians?
Greyson: Well, New York is crazy, that is why I love it. Something new is happening every minute. I also think New York is a very artistic place. There are lots of cool venues and great musicians in New York.
BNH: What are you learning being on tour? What kind of stuff/items travel with you?
Greyson: Coming into this tour I had performed but never like this. I’ve learned how to keep things energetic and feed off the crowd’s vibe! I don’t really travel with anything unusual…I have tons of sneakers! And I bring my record player and lots of albums on vinyl.
BNH: Do you have a favorite piano ? Does it travel with you?
Greyson: I love Yamaha pianos! The feel of their pianos is amazing and they sound great of course! I’ve currently got the piano from my music video on tour with me!
BNH: Recent movies you watched and loved?
Greyson: Well I am obsessed with Harry Potter. I have watched all of the movies maybe 20 times each!!(:
BNH: Any guilty pleasures?
Greyson: Guilty pleasures…hmmm…I love dancing to Lady Gaga and Madonna. It’s pretty bad cause I am not a great dancer!
BNH: Do you like making music videos?
Greyson: I love it! I have only made one, but it was a very awesome experience.
BNH: When you finally have some time to yourself, what do you do to relax?
Greyson: I like to just lay down and listen to music on my iPod. That always calms me down.
