Beverly Hills, CA – Announced early Tuesday morning James Cameron’s epic “Avatar” and Jason Reitman’s downsizing drama “Up In the Air” came up as the leading nominees for the 67th Golden Globes.
Having yet to be released in North America, and receiving rave reviews after its premiere in London, Oscar-winner James Cameron’s “Avatar” scored nominations in the best drama and best director categories.
Going head to head with “Avatar,” is Jason Reitman’s “Up In the Air,” about a corporate downsizer played by George Clooney who starts to question his life.
The film picked up several nominations including best drama, a best actor nom for Clooney, and best director for Reitman.
Other nominees for best drama include the Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker,” directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the bloody World War II action-drama “Inglorious Bastards,” directed by Quentin Tarentino, and the hard-hitting drama “Precious,” about the struggles of an illiterate, abused African-American teenager.
In Hollywood, the Globes are often believed to be a forecast for films that end up as contenders for the Oscars, which will take place at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater on March 7, 2010.
However, in the recent years the Oscar has not always honored the same winners as the Golden Globes. In fact, the rags-to-riches drama “Slumdog Millionaire” is the only film in the past five years to have received a best picture award at the Golden Globes and then the Oscars.
Celebrities including Justin Timberlake, John Krasinski, and German actress Diane Kruger were up very early (5:00 A.M. local time) for Tuesday’s nomination announcement. The Golden Globes awards – chosen by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and are bestowed in Beverly Hills on January 17, 2010.
