In an official statement, and reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced actress Diane Lane as their choice to play the adoptive mother to Clark Kent, in the new Superman movie, set for release in December 2012.
Lane (46) is considerably a younger pick compared to previous on-screen mothers of Clark Kent. Eva Marie Saint was about 80, when she portrayed the role in 2006’s “Superman Returns,” and actress Phyllis Thacker was 57 in 1978’s “Superman.”
Clark Kent, aka Superman will be portrayed by the 27-year-old Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”).
“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” director Zack Snyder said in his statement.
“We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
Lane received an Oscar nomination for her role as a cheating housewife in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She will be seen next in the HBO movie “Cinema Verite,” opposite actors Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini.
