Brazil‘s most successful film is making it to the screens in America and thensome.
ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN (TROPA DE ELITE 2) Directed by José Padilha (BUS 174, ELITE SQUAD) is set to open in New York on November 11 at the AMC Empire 25 and in Los Angeles on November 18 at the Laemmle’s Sunset 5
The film is also going to be Brazil’s official submission to the 84th Academy Awards® for Best Foreign Language Film.
SQUAD takes place in one of the most dangerous places on Earth: the slum of Rio de Janeiro. As (BOPE), Captain Nascimento (Wagner Moura), the head of Rio’s Special Police Operations Battalion is accused of a massacre when a BOPE mission to calm a jail riot, where it all ends in violence and death. But the citizens of Rio, tired of the crime and drugs that plague their city, embrace him as a hero–and with elections around the corner, he finds himself promoted. Now, Nascimento uses his powerful new position to bring the gangs and criminals to their knees, but quickly discovers that he’s only making things easier for the dirty cops and corrupt.
Penned by Bráulio Mantovani (Academy Award® nominee for his CITY OF GOD script), Elite Squad 2 has become the highest-grossing film of all time in Brazil, cashing in over $70 million, and outgrossing “Avatar,” domestically.
