At first glance of the first few episodes’ synopsis, the answer looks to be yes.
Here’s our Brave New Hollywood view.
Primetime Leading Man, Christopher Meloni!
Not only does “Surviving Jack” boast likable and watchable stars (including Christopher “Law and Order” Meloni – who Eonline called “the best butt on primetime”—who was his competition for that “honor?”), but the FOX series is based on a readable comedic book by Justin Halpern called “I Suck at Girls;” which is set in the ‘90s.
Yes, as time ticks away, the need to creatively mine and sponge off a “new decade” grows. After all, TV has done the ‘60’s (“Mad Men”), the 70’s (“That ’70s Show”), the ‘80’s (“The Goldbergs”) and now Fox TV is doing up the ‘90’s via “Surviving Jack.” No doubt Fox TV/Rupert Murdoch is trying to copyright the ‘00’s.
A Young Cast of Rising Stars!
But first, FOX will go through the ‘90’s—via “Surviving Jack;’ a simple premise which is: a no nonsense, ex-military man dad deals with a teenaged son (Connor Buckley as Frankie Dunlevy) and daughter (Claudia Lee as Rachel Dunlevy), who think and act like they’re much older than their actual ages. And then there is the boyfriend, Doug “Mango” Manganaro, who “Dad” doesn’t want to deal with and is played by talented newcomer Thomas Kasp. Using a single-camera to shoot, all navigate through a maze of nostalgia (“Jurassic Park,” Nirvana music etc.) until they “find” themselves and happiness.

Obviously FOX is hoping that “teenage struggles” does not equal “ratings struggle.”
One of the first teenage struggles is the struggle for “the first kiss” to someone who does not share your DNA. This happens in the first episode to Connor as Frankie, who locks lips at a party with an overly aggressive gal. Indeed, in his case, it happened in Connor’s real life when he was in kindergarten: “I was kind of like kiss-raped by this girl who just came out of nowhere and just kissed me on the lips, and I was just appalled that she did such a thing.”
Another premise that hasn’t been seen on a family sitcom is when Jack Dunlevy (Meloni) makes his son bring Playboy magazines to a homeless encampment. Perhaps what defensive moves Claudia Lee learned when she co-starred in “Kick Ass 2” can be used by Connor when he visits the camp.
This just proves how far the family sitcom has come since the days of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” when TV couldn’t show a married couple sleeping in the same bed (they had two separate beds). To get ratings now, there has to be one separate bed—shared by two married couples.
Or, a potential ratings grabber like “Surviving Jack,” which isn’t about a woman on a date with Jack Nicholson.
“Surviving Jack” premieres March 27, 8:30c / 9:30PT on Fox TV.
