Calm down addicts—“Need for Speed” is a movie; not drugs or the video game! On top of that, it stars Emmy Award winner, Aaron Paul in this DreamWorks’ action flick based on the Electronic Arts video game; which will be directed by “Act of Valor’s” Scott Waugh.
Is this the action film of all action films? Ask EA Executive VP Patrick Soderlund, who said in a statement: “Like the game series itself, the cast for the movie needs to be edgy and cool. Aaron Paul is a rising star — a great choice for the film lead.”
Good Lord.
Why does Hollywood even release lame, self-serving statements by the people who make the film? If they’re going to be statement releasing, why not release one with an ounce of truth in it; like, “Like the money sucking, time wasting game video game series, the cast for the movie needs to fit our budget. We couldn’t afford Johnny Depp so we settled for Aaron Paul…”
But this time, Mr. Soderlund does tell the truth. Mr. Paul is a great choice. Not only did he show off his considerable acting chops in the Sundance Film Festival smash hit, “Smashed,” but he showed he could hold his own with one of Hollywood’s hot actresses, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who now has ample time to choose her next role, considering that her “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” doesn’t appear to be spawning any sequels. “Smashed’s” plot, which consists of a couple who can only find a connection through alcohol, sounds like a reflection of a countless number of Americans today. That is, alcohol acts as the glue that keeps a family together and talking—which sounds suspiciously like a “Lohan Family Reunion…or Family Intervention.”
Yes, after appearing in numerous indies; indies that acted as warm-ups before Mr. Paul was called up to the major leagues of directors ,which includes Scott Waugh, he is verged to be a household name. Interviews with the articulate, almost famous Mr. Paul only reaffirm that if he’s the face of the New Hollywood, then New Hollywood will never get old!
However, whatever Mr. Paul does in the “Need for Speed” film, he can’t erase the memory of Christina Hendricks, who voiced and looked like a character in the Need for Speed video game. No word yet if the game’s creators modeled the two fluffy, round airbags in the cars after Christina’s two fluffy, round—oh, you know where this is going.
