Director Raymond De Felitta’s Rob the Mob is the ideal spring pic for audiences who prefer their action with a side of fuggetaboutit! Featuring an all-star cast that includes Michael Pitt, Andy Garcia, Rey Romano, and of course, a bunch of pissed off wise-guys, it’s your classic mafia/revenge shoot em up. But this clever, nail biter also has a little something extra to distance it from the pack… one-of-kind stage and screen dynamo, Nina Arianda.
The Rising Star of Nina Arianda!
A Tony Winning actress who’s been stealing scenes with bit parts in films like Tower Heist, Midnight In Paris, and Win Win for years now, Arianda finally gets her chance to let it rip in front of the camera, burning up the screen in what can only be called a star-is-born performance. As Rosie, the tough-talking girlfriend of Pitt’s revenge-obsessed schemer, she’s sexy, funny, vulnerable, and just flat out fantastic. And talk about that chemistry with her leading man…
Yet that should come as no surprise to fans of the talented NYU-Tisch alumni. After all, it was her unforgettable pairing with Wes Bentley in David Ives’ scorching two-person stage play, Venus in Fur, that earned the actress universal acclaim (she would win her first Tony in 2012 for the same role opposite Hugh Dancy when the production moved to Broadway) while simultaneously reigniting Bentley’s then-floundering career. The actress was also nominated the previous year for her fearless performance in Doug Hughes’ adaptation of Garson Kanin’s Born Yesterday.
But that’s all in a days work for Ms. Arianda, a Manhattan-born, New Jersey/Germany-raised child of Ukrainian immigrants whose diverse upbringing seems to have aided her ability to disappear completely into every role she chooses.
Lucky for us all, Ms. Arianda easily tapped into the soul and patois of the tri-state area for her delicious tour de force in Rob The Mob. In fact, not since Marisa Tomei’s Oscar-Winning role opposite Joe Pesci in 1992’s My Cousin Vinny has an actress played the part of a badass broad with such fierce charm and disarming grace.
Once again though, that’s just par for the course for the incredible Ms. Nina Arianda… Although this time, you better believe that Hollywood has finally sat up and taken notice!
