Director Abel Ferrara, who has directed everything from Bad Lieutenant to pornography has recently completed 4:44 Last Day on Earth, presented by Fabula/Funny Balloons/Wild Bunch in association with Bullet Pictures. This docu-apocalypse competed in the 68th Venice International Film Festival and the chill inducing trailer just hit the cyber highways.
4:44 Last Day on Earth stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh who play a couple seeking refuge and solace through sex in their final hours. Rumor has it that some of these scenes are an unflattering T.M.I (too much imagery?) for the viewer. So much so, that it caused several journalists to hastily flee the viewing. Which clearly only makes us, want to see it more.
Though the reviews have been a bit harsh and under-impressed, Ferrara claims that challenging his cast about the end of the world resulted in a “flat” response, versus asking everyone individually what they would do if they were to personally die tonight. A different animal was born from that question, perhaps a different way for people to behave based on a switch in their psychology. And who are we to talk on how things would look in the feverish mayhem of the world’s final hours. Clearly, none of us have been there.
The film certainly looks raw and artsy and creepily fascinating, and we should never listen to what critics say. They’re the ones that swore Black Swan was good.
